Las Vegas

(1979)

The Las Vegas Convention Authority commissioned an advertising poster from Frazetta in the mid-seventies. The painting reflected the glamour and the show business that was Vegas in that era. When Kelly Reiber, the advertising agency charged with producing the comps, printed about twenty copies of Frazetta’s image on silver paper to show at the LVCA board meeting, the printing washed out Frazetta'ss colors significantly and made the three showgirls look like their costumes had disappeared. This wouldn’t be a problem, especially in Vegas but the promotion was headed for markets in the Midwest and South and Vegas was on a course to sell themselves as a family destination.

Reluctantly, the agency returned the painting and killed the poster, allegedly destroying the small number of comps produced for the display.
It was a missed opportunity to be truly classy and a fussy attempt to clean up Vegas’ hard-won image as the country’s adult playground.
Accomplished with oil on canvas.
